Lets Level Up Your Networking and Collaborations
So, I wanna give you a fresh framework for thinking about networking and collaboration, both up and down the ladder.
Let’s be honest, I see tons of DMs and messages where people just blast me with their stuff – artwork, writing samples, you name it. I know their hearts are in the right place, wanting to collab, but it’s not quite hitting the mark.
Horizontal vs. Vertical: Expanding Your Network Universe
First things first, collaboration and networking can happen both horizontally and vertically. Imagine yourself at a certain level – that’s your zone. Now, picture collaborating horizontally, which means teaming up with folks on your level.
Here ,the key is mutual benefit. What do YOU get out of this collaboration, and what’s in it for the other person?
This year, for example, I did a live event with someone in my field who targets a similar audience. We both gained exposure and reached new people by joining forces.
Climbing the Ladder: Collaboration Goes Both Ways
Now, let’s talk about vertical collaboration, and guess what? You ALWAYS have something valuable to offer, no matter where you are in your journey.
Here’s the kicker:
You might be thinking, “Why collaborate with someone below me?” Remember those messages I mentioned earlier? People sending their work without anything that hooks me in? That’s because they’re not offering value.
But, here’s a game-changer. Recently, a student messaged me, not just bragging about their work, but offering to intern (paid or unpaid) to learn from me. That’s a message I respond to! They’re showing how they can contribute.
Reaching for the Stars: How to Offer Value
The same goes for reaching out to people above you. Ditch the “look at me, I’m amazing” emails. When I want to write for someone established, I don’t ramble about my awesomeness. My first line is something like, “Hey, I see you’re telling incredible stories. I can help you take them to the next level, here’s how…” This is how I landed one of my highest-paying gigs last year! I focused on what I could offer, not just how great I am.
Collaboration as Growth: Why Mentoring Matters
Collaborating with “lower-level” folks can be a win-win. One of the best ways to truly master your craft is by teaching others. If you can explain something clearly to someone new, it hones your own skills and makes you more efficient.
The Takeaway: Value-Driven Collaboration
So, the key to both horizontal and vertical collaboration is focusing on value. What can YOU offer to the table?
Let’s Recap:
- Collaboration goes both ways – horizontally (with peers) and vertically (up and down the ladder).
- In any collaboration, think about the mutual benefit for both parties.
- When reaching out to those above you, focus on the value you bring, not just your own achievements.
- Collaborating with “lower-level” people can be a fantastic learning experience for you too!
